Just a note: while relying on phantom references or finalizer for your cleanup
is incorrect, it is reasonable to use them to do a verification that your
cleanup has occurred on those objects that do get collected. This is with the
caveat however that PhantomReferences always add something to your gc costs so
you might want to make it switchable.
