[~benedict] this is just a key cache file.
Perhaps unless we have a non-bigtable-only configuration we can keep the old
format but this would introduce additional mess in the code as we would have to
deal with two formats. IMO autosaving cache is not worth it - new cache files
will be ignored by the old version when downgrading as the version is included
in the file path.
