I reran the VectorCodecTest locally to ensure I did not break anything. But I 
need more guidance with the CI and how do we test with different branches, etc.

[~absurdfarce], do you mind taking a look and helping me to push this patch 
through? Are there any docs I can look at for contributors in OSS? I found 
these instructions for running tests locally:

I ran a local MVN clean test, and it finished successfully. I was using Java 8.
