That is what we were doing before, too - whatever can be merged and it is not
breaking with the previous versions, gets merged. Some of the updates that were
needed for JDK17 were committed from 4.1.
Whatever will require a previous JDK version to be dropped (we maintain two) -
it waits until the drop.
The only issue is that there will be breakages until we have it in CI, as
people do not test their patches on the new version, but we can't have
everything. I was also fixing every now and then the broken trunk.
We bumped many of the dependencies already with 5.0
