Actually the validation is present in the Modeler (see attached screenshot). So 
Cayenne does alert you about the problem. Runtime on the other hand does not 
attempt any validations and will happily load an incomplete project. This is 
sort of by design. This way you can run partial mappings during development, 
speeding up the cycle.
