    Someone mentioned /etc/uname... not sure if that's encoded to any
    general standard either but it's worth researching.  The 'uname'
    program is the only thing that's actually standardized across platforms.

'/uname' may also be less likely to be affected by the unexpected - e.g. someone *elses* idea - even an inconsiderate application - attempting to utilize ~/upgrade

Nice byproduct if so formatted that the 'uname' utility - or an enhanced one - JFW w/r showing the relevant info when asked by humans as well as the build tools...
