This repo has a very long history, back to 2014 or 2015. Nonetheless, there
are currently [3 released versions of this
code](https://datasketches.apache.org/docs/Community/Downloads.html): 3.0.2
(java 8, 11), 4.1.0 (java 17), and 6.0.0 (java 21). However, when I wrote
versions 4.1.0 and 6.0.0 I used early incubation code and preview code for the
Java FFM API not realizing at the time, that Oracle removes access to
Incubation and preview code when the next version comes out. So this Memory
project can still be used with those versions, but with severely limited
functionality. I.e., no off-heap memory operations at all.

Now FFM API was finally released in Sep 2025, and I quickly created a new
version of DS-Java substituting FFM for this Memory project entirely. But
there are a number of large projects (e.g., Spark) that haven't moved to Java
25 and are stuck on Java 17 and 21. And they want to use our Library. It took
me a while to figure out my strategy, but I ended up going back and using code
from the DS-Memory 3.0.2 version and refactoring it to support Java versions
11, 17, and 21. This is that effort and why you see all these old commits.
You will find more information on the background
[here](https://github.com/apache/datasketches-memory/blob/update_7.0.X/datasketches-memory-java11/src/main/java/org/apache/datasketches/memory/package-info.java).

It is not surprising but a number of our customers have been begging me to
fix this problem for Java 17 and 21.
So this is the fix for DS-Memory and it supports Java 11, 17, and 21. After
this, this project will no longer be needed.

Once this is released, I will need to go back and fix DS-Java, where
versions 7.01 (Java 17) and 8.0.0 (java 21) still depend on DS-Memory, and I'll
move the dependency to this DS-Memory 7.0.0. So that users will have full
off-heap memory capability using Java 17 and 21. That will also be a big
project, but now that I have done this one, I have a pretty good plan on how to
fix DS-Java older versions.
