Narrowed. A probe showed the actual exception is a plain
`java.io.IOException` with message `unable to read commit metadata for instant
[...]` -- not null, and not an `EOFException`. Of the five clauses only
`contains("unable to read")` ever fired, so the condition is now that message
plus the original Avro check. The `getMessage() == null` case you flagged is
gone.
