[~bbende] - I replaced the second patch with a new one that addresses #2 and 
#1. With #1, I actually changed it to not even bother performing the logic to 
cut out leading/trailing white space if trim == true. Since we will be calling 
trim() anyway, there's no point in performing the logic twice.
