Hmm. I tried it on a different machine running Debian. I got further there, but
ended up with the same error in the browser after trying to set up MySQL
instead of Derby.
However, on the command line, there's a different error. See:

Meanwhile, the error in the browser is: http://pastebin.com/7TCkN2hc
It seems that for some reason when an error occurs, a different exception
occurs while (attempting to) report the error to the user.
