Hi @mbrookhart thanks for this performance improvment! I found that this PR is causing `CUDA: an illegal memory access was encountered` during inference for a TensorFlow SSD object detection model. I can't reproduce it in a standalone unit test, so I think there may be some race condition or code relying on unitialized memory.
