Closing: #937 documents the single-footer schema limit, and #959 tracks synthesizing partition columns that exist only in the directory path. Merging footers would be cheap on a full snapshot, which already reads every footer, but incremental sync reads only the new files, so the two paths could report different schemas for the same directory.
