Found [this benchmark from cloudflare](https://blog.cloudflare.com/squeezing-the-firehose/) and seems like the best choice would be between snappy for kafka <2.1 and zstd for >=2.1. Probably worth making a benchmark based on tracing data and ship zipkin server with recommended compression libs.
