Please also go through BUILDING.txt in the code base to find out how to build
the source code. A very good area to start off learning about Hadoop and
helping the community is to fix a failing unit test case.

If every day you spent an hour reproducing a bug filed in a jira, you could
come up to speed eventually on a lot of sharp corners of the source code, and
probably contribute some value to the community as well.
