Daryn Sharp commented on HADOOP-16214:
--------------------------------------

{quote}The bad data input matches your proposed regex and also previous faulty
regex.
{quote}
Patently false.  Both prevent all the bad examples.  One of your cited bad
input – "a/@EXAMPLE.COM" – is a regression for your patch.

Consider cyclomatic complexity. To the casual developer, is patch 8 or 9 more
readily understandable and less risky for future maintainers? 50 lines of
parsing with 7 conditionals? 15 lines with 2 conditionals?

Patch 8 is not acceptable. It's complex, changes parsing semantics, and reduces
performance in hot code. If you have proposed changes to patch 9 that remain
consistent to existing behavior, let's consider them.

> org.apache.hadoop.security.authentication.util.KerberosName is in charge of
> converting a Kerberos principal to a user name in Hadoop for all of the
> services requiring authentication.
> Although the Kerberos spec
> ([https://web.mit.edu/kerberos/krb5-1.5/krb5-1.5.4/doc/krb5-user/What-is-a-Kerberos-Principal_003f.html])
>  allows for an arbitrary number of components in the principal, the Hadoop
> implementation will throw a "Malformed Kerberos name:" error if the principal
> has more than two components (because the regex can only read serviceName and
> hostName).
