Erik Krogen commented on HADOOP-16214:
--------------------------------------
Though I'd like to move forward with supporting our use case, I think I agree
with Daryn that we shouldn't break existing semantics, at least not within a
major version. It's difficult for us to say who might be relying on the current
parsing semantics. At minimum if we are going to do so, I think we should have
a DISCUSS thread to alert others about the change and gather additional
feedback for how the existing semantics are being leveraged.
I've only loosely followed the discussion above, but if there is a way to
support our use case without breaking compatibility, as I believe Daryn states
above that he supplied, I am +1 for that.

> org.apache.hadoop.security.authentication.util.KerberosName is in charge of
> converting a Kerberos principal to a user name in Hadoop for all of the
> services requiring authentication.
> Although the Kerberos spec
> ([https://web.mit.edu/kerberos/krb5-1.5/krb5-1.5.4/doc/krb5-user/What-is-a-Kerberos-Principal_003f.html])
> allows for an arbitrary number of components in the principal, the Hadoop
> implementation will throw a "Malformed Kerberos name:" error if the principal
> has more than two components (because the regex can only read serviceName and
> hostName).
