* all dependencies have been briefly opened so i can track their status.
* renaming the 3.3.3 version in jira to 3.3.4 has automatically moved all the
fixed in 3.3.3 issues to that release; text will be out of sync.
* going to submit the PRs in an ordered chain consistent with that of 3.2.3
