not sure if that surefire jira is the one, as our build is still at 3.0.0-M1
and i saw it on trunk. maybe some other aspect of the build has changed now
homebrew put me on to maven 3.3.9.
anyway, we should pre-emptively fix our build so a surefire upgrade won't lose
the output we depend on.
