Most of the Java-side changes here look okay to me. I am not very sure of the
FreeBSD platform and its behavior so while some of the changes made there seem
alright to me, am unsure about the other (for ex: the size_t -> long) changes
that are applied globally to non-FreeBSD ones as well.
