I think we're making too much out of this issue. It's a small and minor
cleanup. It's also clearly an incompatible change - wire compatibility is just
as important as API compatibility. Aside from the fact that this isn't a good
trade-off (break wire compatibility for a small cleanup?) we explicitly
discussed maintaining client wire compatibility after 2.0 on general@ and our
release policy (http://wiki.apache.org/hadoop/Roadmap) covers this:
"Thus every release with the same major version is both API and 'on the wire'
compatible."
I'd be OK with this change for trunk/3.0, even though it would be a bummer if
3.0 clients don't work with the previous major version.
