Todd Lipcon commented on HADOOP-9192:
-------------------------------------

Stop making this about CDH. It's about Apache too. Breaking compatibility
screws users, regardless of distro. If it's required, let's do it. If there are
_real_ gains to be had, let's do it. But these patches don't help users at all,
and they only marginally help developers.

bq. Just because you consider it stable or you sent an email with such an idea,
it is not stable. Community decides that. There have already been discussions
around that.

How does the community decide it? This whole "stable" vs "beta" vs "alpha"
thing is a new concept, with nothing written about it in our bylaws. All our
release policies state is that dot releases don't break compatibility. So, you
need to make these changes in a 3.x. If you want to propose to change the
policy, by all means start a vote. But I'm not going to retract my -1 unless
there is a clear policy that says what alpha means, and how the community
decides when something is no longer alpha. If the PMC votes to amend our
policies and docs, and the vote results in my -1 being invalid by the new
rules, then it should certainly be considered invalid, but at this point we're
just in a pissing match over our two different viewpoints, neither of which has
been solidified in any vote or any discussion which came to a clear consensus.
