Steve Loughran commented on HADOOP-9547:
----------------------------------------
The obvious solution is to have an {{isAlive()}} interface that a
{{FileSystem}} or {{FileContext}} SHOULD implement, which returns true iff the
FS is live, and a static isHealthy(URI) method to create the FS and do the
liveness test on it
> add isHealthy interface/test to filesystems for JT &c to use

> Key: HADOOP-9547
> URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HADOOP-9547
> Project: Hadoop Common
> Issue Type: Improvement
> Affects Versions: 3.0.0, 1.3.0
> Reporter: Steve Loughran
> Priority: Minor
>
> There are specific {{isHealthy()}} tests for HDFS; in
> {{DistributedFilesystem}} in branch-1; {{HdfsUtils}} in trunk -tests used by
> layers above.
> All filesystems have the right to be unhealthy; we should make the probe
> something each FS can implement, with a probe operation that can be called
> independent of the underlying FS.
