There are a lot of symlink fixes that are still not committed, such as
HDFS-4934, HDFS-4935, HDFS-4933, HDFS-4019, and HADOOP-9652. Until those are
committed, I would not recommend relying on symlinks. I don't think those are
going to be done in time for 2.1, let alone backported, so I would rather punt
on this. By the way, reviews are welcome on all of the above!
