[Switching to new work JIRA account] Sure, I'll submit a patch with the
suggested approach above and the extra cleanup you requested.
I've just submitted the necessary paperwork to get myself added to Oracle's
Apache contributor agreement for Hadoop, that process should take a week or so,
after that I'll be able to post a patch.
