I am interested in this. Just busy at the moment. I think commons is a good place for this, but If we cant get it here then Krysalis (http://krysalis.org) is a
good place to grow a community.
My clients have been using my own home grown Version class for two years now. Moving my Version class
to Krysalis has already been discussed and approved I just haven't started yet.
Every Java progammers knows that classpath issues are the worst part of our job. Versioning packages is one part imporving that. Ted Neward <http://www.neward.net/ted/weblog/index.jsp> thought that a JSR to replace the classpath concept is a worthy goal. Versioning will be an important part of that.

Needless to say every program supports some sort of version information either on the command line or in an aboutbox. Having a standard but very flexible approach is a Good Idea.

Lets see if another round of talk here leads to any thing, If not then I can push for this at Krysalis.
By the way don't worry about moving things from Krysalis to Apache, if the growth warrants it. Krysalis license is Apache compatible.

All,

Ok ... so I hardly inspired a storm of enthusiasm with this e-mail. ;-) Mind
you, I didn't get flamed either, so perhaps I oughtn't complain. :-)

Maybe it was the topic, maybe it was how long I made the intro, maybe it was
folks are too busy, or maybe it was that I forgot to switch of "Read
Notification" (sorry about that.) I will wait to see if any further
responses are forthcoming however, since 2 days are about passed, I doubt I
should be expecting them.
