[betwixt] refactoring branch has now been merged into HEAD

the big recent commit is the merger of the refactoring branch into 
HEAD. i've had to comment out the schema generation tests since it only 
works with the HEAD version of digester. once the new digester is 
version is release, they'll go back in.
