No. it is not dead. But it has not had it's 1.0 release yet, so there might still be a few bugs left.
Third, what is xdocs? Why is it impossible to find any information on it?

Fourth, I'm trying to build jelly from CVS, and I get the enclosed error. What gives? There's no mention of any requirement in either project.xml, readme regarding downloading the DTD's.
No, you are right. There is not much documentation about this. Most of the Jakarta Commons projects share some files for the generation of each project's site. To be able to build the site for Jelly you also need to check out commons-build from cvs. It is a part of the commons module at the same level as jelly in cvs.
In fact, like jelly, maven, and
xdocs, there's absolutely no information regarding them anywhere on jarkarta.
Well in Maven's case, that is because Maven is not a Jakarta project, but is an Apache top level project (TLP). Information about Maven can be found at:
