I second Rahul's opinion. I wouldn't want to build high barreers, but
I'd prefer to have them. Apart from that, I have never found it a
problem to join the Commons. In particular, considering my own
invitation which came basically with the first patch.
Apart from that, the more important part, as far as I am concerned, is
the policy of whether and when I may commit to subprojects. I am sure,
that most of us would consider it a rude behaviour if I'd simply start
committing to a subproject without a silent or explicit confirmation
or even invitation by the subprojects members.
If that policy applies to subprojects, then I can't see, why anyone
should be considered a member of commons without being a member of at
least one subproject.
One thing that we shoud remain clear on is that there are *no*
subprojects in commons. There never have been and we should not go
back down the Jakarta path of "subprojects." We have components and
people working on them. We have a polite way of getting involved in
working on components, discussing things, and collectively providing
oversight. I don't think this is borken or needs to be formalized any
further. Sometimes I worry about whether we have adequate code-level
oversight over all of the components, but I see the answer to that to
be growing the community and *active* committer base. That's why I
want to make it easy for people to get involved - both ASF committers
and volunteers who are not yet ASF committers. That does not mean
making committers of everyone instantly and I do not advocate that.
We can set whatever bar we want for becoming a commons committer. I
expressed my view that we should allow ASF committers to join Commons
on demand, but Its clear that just being an ASF committer is not
enough for some of us, so lets close this discussion and use private@
(when it is set up) to discuss and vote on new committers.
