My assumption was that they are not guaranteed to be closed. I don't have any concrete information to back this up but my general impression is that some JVMs cannot be relied on to call finalize(). Moh's reference to SWT seems to be a good example. Oleg, in regard to the IdleConnectionManager / HttpConnection coupling I am certainly interested in hearing other suggestions.
