Okay... but you asked for it...
I'm Andy Oliver. I founded the Jakarta POI project
(jakarta.apache.org/poi) with Marc Johnson.
I'm a committer to Lucene although I mostly only get active when I want
to start something and mostly
stay inactive when the direction is good. (I know what I need but know
little of the low level subject
matter). I'm active in Cocoon, and semi-active in JAMES (I want to be
very active but heck...I want a
million dollars and a 36 hour day but we cannot get all we want).
In addition to my work at Jakarta/XML/etc I am working on some stuff
(http://www.krysalis.org/cgi-bin/krywiki.pl?DServicesAPI) for D
(www.digitalmars.com/d,
www.opend.org) a new Java-like answer to C++. D support Garbage
collection and throws out nasty
features like multiple inheritence, but is a "metal" language like C or
C++.
I also am now President of the Triangle Java User's group
(www.trijug.org) and last night I had the increadible
privilege of giving a talk on Cocoon
(http://www.trijug.org/meetinginfo.jsp) with
author (http://www.lanw.com/books/cocoonbook/default.htm) Conrad D'Cruz
. Highlights included notable
figures like an introduction to .NET by Sam Ruby
(http://trijug.org/archive_meetings/2002/032002.html) a
talk on Ant (http://trijug.org/archive_meetings/2002/092002.html) and a
Container shootout between
BEA, JBOSS, IBM and Oracle
(http://trijug.org/archive_meetings/2002/092002ex.html) where I had the
priviledge of meeting Marc Fluery (whom I think is a really neat
guy....he eats almost as many altoids as I do).
I arrange the talks so thats why I think they are all so great except
for mine ;-)
I'm also privileged to be a founder of krysalis.org. Which is an
organization with similar ideals as a Apache.
I'm learning to brew my own beer, and have many strong opinions on what
constitutes a good beer, good
red wine, etc. I have two stepsons, one of whom is autistic so I also
know what foods contain gluten and
casine (which when ingested by some autistic children results in
undesirable behavior).
I'm driven to spur technology, to spur community and its economic
effects. I've a passion for good software and
I like to watch others do my work for me ;-) I also kinda like to pee
in big company's sanka by wrecking their
software business models that involve extrodinant restrictive licensing
policies by out-coding them and giving it
away for free ;-) (however the offer still stands to actuate and
microsoft, I'll happily quit POI for 1.5 million dollars. It went
up because I'd want to donate .5 to make it up the the community ;-)
Amounts are negotiable but you get the idea ;-) )
I come off abbrasive in emails, although I say the same things in
person.... for some reason they are taken wrong in
email.... and I type really fast...
I'm an American in Raleigh NC (near Sam), but I'm against the proposed
War and I vote (though sometimes my vote
doesn't count despite being in the majority)! Just FYI ;-)
I'm also younger than you. (chances are ;-) )
If you're not real bored and you made it this far down... you can read
more here: http://www.trilug.org/~acoliver.

Andy, you don't start an email like this and then NOT introduce
yourself. :)
