If one project sets a 'standard' that's a bad thing. If we design by 
committee, that's ok.

So what is there to worry about? If Maven hypes itself and then falls 
short of expectations, what the heck, it looks like it's only hurt itself.

The fact that Maven generates ant build files for use without Maven 
doesn't help any?

If people start hype'ing Maven to the detriment of the ASF, I'm sure 
someone will step in.

FWIW, most of the Maven developers don't want to push Maven onto other 
developers, and we've actively stayed out of the 'Please give us a 
proposal as to why we should adopt Maven' discussions. People will either 
want it or not.
