Sounds like the usb network module isn't loaded. All newer kernels has
these modules no more compiled into the kernel and maybe it was
forgotten to add to the /etc/modules file in the actual FDOM version.
Take a look at the loaded modules (with ldmod) if "g_ether" is loaded
and if it is in /etc/modules.
