Renaming packages to .opk wouldn't be too bad but I don't see the benefit as they all work.
I agree that there's a problem with outdated packages that move away from opkg.org. Maybe the best option would be not to show these packages in the repository any more though it's bad for an user who is used to install some stuff from opkg.org (using a script, for example).
