On January 31, sixty-five people converged upon Oxford University to
spend 2 days sharing, learning, and collaborating around Opencast
Matterhorn, as well as contributing to the future of the project. Using
a modified unconference format, participants collectively set the agenda
during the meeting, resulting in an engaging and productive balance of
structured presentations and spontaneous conversations.
As a community and a young project, we were thrilled at the level of
interest shown by the number of attendees, as well as the enthusiasm and
engagement demonstrated by all. A huge thank you to our hosts at the
Oxford University Computing Centre, and to conference sponsors Entwine,
Koemei, Longsight and Teltek!

Unconference Highlights
* 65 attendees representing 35 schools and organizations from 12 countries
* Participants came with a variety of perspectives in their roles,
ranging from developer, audio-visual and media specialists,
designers, engineers, systems administrators, and administration
* Vendors currently offering or considering services and products
around Opencast Matterhorn talked about their offerings and how they
can help support the adopting community.
* Roadmapping sessions brought everyone together to identify all of
the current Matterhorn development efforts planned for 2012 by
organizations, a gap analysis to identify what is still needed, and
an attempt to fill those gaps through contributions from the community.
* 18 Lightning Talks gave attendees a quick look at activities and
projects going on across the Opencast Matterhorn community
* Several sessions targeted prospective adopters who came to gain a
basic understanding of Matterhorn and how it might meet the needs
for their organization, including "Matterhorn Implementation and
Architecture Overview" by Rudiger Rolf and roundtable "Piloting
Experiences", "Considerations for starting a pilot" and "How
Matterhorn compares... in terms of money"
* Sessions focused on how to extend Matterhorn, including
"Personalizing with jQuery Themeroller", "Automated Transcription"
and "Matterhorn integration"
* Discussions were held around current issues and future planning for
Matterhorn, including "How should the capture agent evolve" and
"Designing Matterhorn for the 'Ops Guy' persona"
* A community board meeting opened the floor to discuss and engage
with the community around priorities for the board to focus on in 2012.
We look forward to planning another meeting in North America later this
year!
