I'm looking at Community Engine as exactly what my group needs to
migrate away from these multiple places we have a presence- Facebook,
Meetup.com, etc. But the one piece of functionality I know I can't
leave behind (not without starting a riot) is what we have with our
Yahoo! Group. Meaning, the combination of a mailing list and a forum
into one entity, so that members can participate in the discussion
however they like- either on the website by logging in to Community
Engine, or "staying home" and just sending and receiving the messages
via email.

Without even considering Community Engine, I have done extensive
searching for some kind of product or package that would do this, but
it appears that it simply does not exist- or more likely, it isn't
available at a price my group could pay (which isn't to mean we need
it free, but the amount we could pay is so little that might as well
be the case).

I have spoken with the administrator of one site using Community
Engine, and he indicated to me that it would not be difficult to work
with the MySQL database and connect the forums to just about any
mailing list software. But he does seem to indicate that scripts would
have to be written- something he might could help me with, but I don't
know this person well enough to get into that right now.

So I'm posting this message here to see if anyone has any suggestions
on what direction I should take, perhaps someone else has done this or
investigated this and knows of a possible solution they can suggest. I
realize that the situation I'll probably have on my hand is that
everyone will have to sign up for the Community Engine, and then
everyone will have to independently sign up for the mailing list, but
it's most likely that we'll only have a single forum/mailing list
anyway so we won't make people figure out which mailing lists to sign
up for.

Thanks in advance.
