Hi all.
I'll apologize from the start for the long email, but
since this is my first post to the list I thought a
little "introduction" might be nice. If you can make
it through all this, I have a couple general questions
at the bottom which I would appreciate someone trying
to clear up for me.
I subscribed about a week ago and have been reading
with interest the mails that come through. I have
also read through the FAQ a couple of times. Wow!
What a great resource. I can't believe all of the
great stuff I have found on the web regarding Compact
Macs!
Macs used to be second nature to me, but that was
years ago before I turned to the dark side :-)
Growing up, my father worked for the government. When
the 128K Mac came out, we got one. When the 512K was
released, we got another one... the trend continued on
through the Plus and, I believe, the SE... I think it
was around System 6.0.5??? that I begain moving away
from Macs. (Although he continued to bring home newer
and better models) I've been working with pee cees
for the last 12 years and know them pretty well, but I
found a box full of old Mac software (some very old -
like a copy of Macpaint 1.3 for the 128!) and decided
I needed a trip down memory lane.
At any rate, over the past couple weeks, I have
aquired a SE/30 running System 6.0.7 w/ 1mb of RAM and
a 40mb disk, and, also, a Color Classic running System
7.5 with 10MB of RAM and a 160MB Disk. Since reading
over all the information I have been finding on Low
End Macs on the web, I have definately got the
fever... Rather than just setting up a word
processing machine to play with with a few favorite
old games (my original plan), I have decided to learn
as much as I can about Macs and customize and expand
my new friends as much as I can (within reason).
So... onto my questions.
I've read the FAQ section regarding transfering files
from pee cee to Mac, however, I want to set at least
one of my Macs up for web browsing and email... I am
currently hooked up to the net via cable modem from my
main pee cee. That pee cee is running a proxy server
to share the connection with a few laptops I have
kicking around. Can I simply assign one of the Macs
an IP address and connect it to the hub? If I assign
it a gateway IP to the proxy server (I'm assuming I
need to do this... again, forgive me, I come from a
pee cee world) will it send network traffic as it
should to that address and so on, or will a conflict
of some kind pop up since the proxy server is pee cee
based? Perhaps I should put in a router and share the
connection that way??? What do you all think?
The next question is really a rather stupid one, and
I'm sure that I can figure it out myself here in a bit
with just a little surfing and research, but would
someone please tell me plainly (no need to go into
much detail as I'm sure I'll figure it out) exactly
what is Hypercard??? I have it on both of my Macs and
I saw some recent list mail which discussed it, but it
isn't tripping any of the old memory banks...
Thanks in advance for your help and I promise to keep
my questions and contributions to the list shorter
from now on :-)
Sionnach
