Sounds like something got munged on the peecee somewhere.

Let us know; my preference would be to download .hqx files on the peecee
(where possible), move them to the iMac before anything is done to them,
and then unstuff them there, where they can't get munged by a peecee. From
there, transfer them to the SE.
