Well I have to tell you all about this because I know you're interested, which
of course few people around me are :-)

I recently acquired a SE/30, which I kept at work (so avoiding a confrontation
with my wife over yet another old Mac joining our family). I added an Asante
ethernet card, 32M of memory (and Mode32), and replaced the drive with a 1.2Gb.
I called it "Virgil".

I've loaded OS 7.5.5 and Open transport 1.1.2 (which adds directly to 7.5.5
BTW). I downloaded a free copy of BetterTelnet, and Fetch 2.1.2.

I normally use a PC at my desk which has a ethernet connection to the companies
network. I added a small hub, and thus connected both PC and Mac to my desk
ethernet line.

By selecting the "Using DHCP Server" option in TCP/IP I got an IP address
assigned to Virgil.

One problem is the system doesn't recognize my macs name. Suggestions anyone?

Using BetterTelnet I can now log into the companies unix based manufacturing
information system, and get all the info I need!

I downloaded a copy of TYPSoft FTP Server Version 0.97.1 (freeware) to my PC.
Using Fetch I can now FTP files to and from my PC.

I also found that a number of the network laser printers were available to me in
the chooser - so now I can get anything printed.

One last thing... I bought an old copy of VersaTerm Pro for $2. I loaded it,
along with the LAT extension (to connect to DEC VMS system) onto Virgil. Now I
can log directly onto an old Vax system that I use to drive test equipment, and
that I *cannot* do from my PC!

Next, I'm looking forward to emailing our IT department from Virgil when my
winblows machine throws another fit...... ;-)

Be encouraged. Last year I knew nothing of Macs or networks. Reading this list
has helped my a lot. Stay in the bounds of reason, and you can do useful work on
old compact Macs (and they are cute!).

Best regards,
             John
