I have a really cool book from 1991 called "Build Your Own Macintosh and
Save a Bundle" (by Bob Brant). It talks about building a "Cat Mac" (catalog
Macintosh, as he calls it) from generic parts... with the exception being
the logic board. So it's not really the same thing as what you're positing,
but your post reminded me of the book. A very interesting read, if you can
find a copy! :)

FWIW, your aspirations are along the same lines of the CHRP (Common Hardware
Reference Platform) which would have been a great thing, but unfortunately,
it was killed (but a lot of its ideas have been implemented in recent Macs).
