It's possible that the volume is set to zero preventing the audible start-up bong, or the audio connector is loose. But on the SE/30 I suspect you have a no-audio problem fairly common on these logic boards. It can usually be fixed by replacing capacitors C3 and C4. Since more than one startup disk fails to boot, I suspect a dirty floppy drive over bad floppies. >Am I flogging a dead horse, or what? If you slapped the side when the ? was showing and it didn't help, then you were flogging a dead hard drive. When I boot up an unknown SE/30 and see any kind of disk or mac icon I am happy, because I can fix just about anything on it except the logic board.
