It seems to me that having a full blow computer of any sort would require too much baggage (logic, power supplies etc.) Have you thought about using a device such as the Basic Stamp. They are small, relatively cheap, are powered by a 9 volt battery, and with some programming are capable of performing several functions per stamp. You could easily use several stamps for different applications and the programming seems relatively simple. They have a built in RS-232 interface and would talk to any computer. You can buy several variations, many with a small prototype board on them, and interface to your solenoids, control motors, whatever.
