> Clark ...MacTCP doesn't load until some program starts it up. Until
MacTCP loads there will be no response to pings.

I was pinging on the Mac side with MacPing while simultaneously pinging on
the W2K side (using the ping command from the prompt). Wouldn't MacPing be
enough to kick-start MacTCP?

> Clark ...Try posting your MacTCP settings and the settings for your W2K
box too. You might have a mismatch in your IP / mask settings.

The Windows box is set to request an IP address (from the Linksys gateway @
192.168.1.1). Ipconfig reveals the following:

IP Address - 192.168.1.2
Subnet Mask - 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway - 192.168.1.1
DHCP Server - 192.168.1.1
DNS1 - 216.148.227.68
DNS1 - 204.127.202.4

The SE/30 is set to the following using MacTCP v2.06 :

AppleTalk is "Active"
Obtain Address is "Manually"
Routing Information is:
Gateway - 192.168.1.1
IP Address Section:
Class C, Address - 192.168.1.12
Subnet Mask - 255.255.255.0
Net: 12625921 (Lock not checked)
Subnet: 0 (Lock not checked)
Node: 12 (Lock not checked)
Domain Name Server Information section:
DNS1 - 216.148.227.68 (default set)
DNS2 - 204.127.202.4

I have tried these settings using both the EtherTalk & the Ethernet icons
alternately in MacTCP (and rebooting between choices: note that I've
restarted when I've changed anything).

I won't be able to try the different hub until I get home from work tonight.

Thanks again for all the suggestions.
