Hi all. I recently got an SE/30 from ebay, and it's in pretty good shape, except: After booting system 6.0.5 (Finder 6.1.5) all the way to the desktop, it displays a message box with the external floppy icon in it (Mac with drive to the right of it, drive has an arrow above it pointing down), saying "This disk is unreadable. Would you like to format it?" with buttons "Eject" (default) and "Initialize." When I choose Initialize, it displays another message box telling me that the disk is write-protected, with an OK button. Clicking OK clears the screen, but then the first box (Disk unreadable) comes up again three seconds later, ad infinitum. Choosing Eject in the first message box has the same result. Funny thing is, there IS no external floppy drive; I don't have one. After doing some digging, the only problem I've come across that's at all similar to this was said to be the result of a bad "RC filter", which is a 20-pin DIP located on the logic board between the internal and external floppy connectors. I opened the beast up and DIP is there, but the simplest solution, they said, was to remove it. However, I'm not confident enough yet with my soldering skills to try that, and I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem, with a less destructive solution. I'd really appreciate any input anyone has on this.

While Apple's official stance is that these are not to be distributed, I don't see why they'd have a problem with distribution of the service manual for one of their "obsolete" products that's out of warranty by about 10 years anyway (I don't mean to come across with an ugly tone, quite the contrary, even though 1-800-SOS-APPLe did completely stonewall me about this, confirming only that they manufactured the SE/30 at one time and that it was "obsolete"). In other words, if you have an SE/30 and would like the service manual for it (Including take-apart instructions, problem diagnosis and repair procedures, and internal part numbers and tools), email me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] and I'll be happy to email it to you. And if you don't say anything, I won't. ;-) - Brad -- Compact Macs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/>.
