I recently put a 500 Meg hard drive in external case to use with my SE and it works fine. I just had to put a jumper on the bare drive so it would have a different ID than the internal drive (I think I set it to 2) I had to format the drive,as it was formatted with OS 8.6 and the SE didn't recognize it with that type of formatting. As far as using the external case, I prefer it in the case I've got rather than inside the machine for two reasons. First, the case I've got is one that has the same footprint as the SE. I place the SE on top of the external drive making the screen higher; much easier on my neck. Also, if I want to move a lot of files, I disconnect the drive and hook it up to my other machine. This makes backing up much easier. Another reason for using the external case (hasn't come into play yet, knock on wood) is that if the drive goes bad, you can still boot from the internal hard drive. Incidentally, the drive I'm using is a Quantum, pulled from a 7200 near as I can tell. Naturally, you'll have to set the SCSI ID to something that isn't already in use, and use the appropriate termination.
