Greetings, Darren.
I have to admit that I built my system mostly out of found parts, too.
Almost everything was cast-offs from work or leftovers from home system
upgrades. I did pay $20 for the CPU and $35 for a new mid-tower case.
When all you need to do is pass packets, a pair of ISA NICs is the way
to go. 3com Etherlink III NICs are about as generic as one could want
and cost ~$5 around here; 3com has all the docs and software online still.
I'm not sure I would chose Win 95 as the base software platform for a
firewall. As I said to Cayenne, I think GNU/Linux or *BSD would make a
much better foundation for a homebrew firewall/router. Cayenne's
comments almost tempt me to try loading GNU/Linux onto my LC 475.

No matter how paranoid you are, it isn't paranoid enough.
