Maybe this is a little bit off topic, but... My ethernet DSL modem (Alcatel Speed Touch Home) does have DHCP capabilities, which are by default turned off. I'd like to share this DSL connection. My provider (Bell South) uses PPPoE connections. I'm beginning to appreciate the utility, reliability, and efficiency of hardware router function instead of software...
My compact macs and Power macs all have ethernet capabilities, known good, but I am so far only able to get my wintel machines successfully online with this connection. Has anyone successfully set up a software router for this situation? Is it strongly recommended that I instead buy a hardware router, despite still having to pay for this modem? If so, or even if not, has anyone found a particular modem to be well-suited for this setup? Thanks for any input, -Brian -- Compact Macs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/>.
