What follows is admittedly a "Fix my Mac" letter, concerning a
repair attempt gone horribly awry. I am a self-taught Mac hobbyist
and have tinkered without mishap on several desktop boxes and even my
Powerbook. I'm stuck here and looking for help. TIA.
Got an SE/30 from my sis. When switched on it showed alternately a
screenful of disjointed vertical lines OR the desktop and some open
windows; in the latter case it would not respond to keyb or mouse
(both known-good).
The plan was to make this SE/30 into an ethernet router.
I figured the first step was a new pram battery. Armed with some
service docs I took the machine apart and brought the old batt (dated
1989!) to Rat Shack for replacement. Another issue was an old floppy
stuck in the drive; had a spare drive handy. Popped it in, popped in
the batt., and also installed an ethernet card in the PDS slot.
Cleaned the case with ChainBrite (looks great! Thanks Kyle Hansen).
Reconnected ALL the cables, plugged her in, quick prayer, deep
breath, swiched on...
  Dead. Nothing. Lifeless.
  Re-disassembled, re-checked, re-assembled, still dead.
  IS MY NEXT STEP:
--Replace power supply? It was working when I started...
--Replace logic board? Are they that fragile that I wrecked it? I
used my usual reasonable care in handling (OK, no ESD protection).
  --Seek out another SE/30?
