Yes, I've had good luck with my Sony TV remotes working with infrared equipped AV Macs. I'm sure most remotes are pretty generic in their function. The Power button of course will turn off and on your Mac, the channel buttons and volume work like they should, and on most remotes there is a button to switch TV inputs. For example, say you want to switch from your antenna (coax input) to a Nintendo (AV input). The button that would perform that function on a regular TV remote would switch the Mac between the Finder and TV mode.
