Hello, I have a bevy of Compact Macs which I love to use, especially my 128K/512K and my 512ke. When restoring these machines, one of my tests for success has been my ability to access the internet with these old workhorses. I can of course do that with little problem with either a 512ke or a Plus or SE/SE-30 because MacPPP and MacTCP will work with System 6.0.5 and up. However, with previous operating systems (Macintosh Systems 1.1g to 6) MacTerminal has been my primary means of accessing the internet.
Some ISPs have maintained a Unix prompt type login from which you are able to telnet to various telnet sites or shell accounts. To me this is very versatile and actually quite fun, even at 1200 baud on a 128K. But of late my ISP has "upgraded" its dialup access numbers and the old familiar Unix shell login is no longer available. A PPP dialup is now mandatory. So what to do? I can no longer access the internet with these old Macs with MacTerminal with my current providers. So my question to the list is this: does anyone know of Internet Service Providers which provide the old Unix shell login without a PPP connection? Surfing the web from a 128K telnetted into my shell account and using Lynx is quite fun actually and is an enjoyable online diversion. I would like to continue doing that, but I need some assistance identifying ISPs which still provide the old interface. Of course, I could dial-in to my shell accounts directly because they provide that interface. But those would be needlessly expensive long distance calls for this "diversion."
