Apparently I wasn't specific enough about what I use.

With my 512ke, Plus, SE, and SE/30 I use System 6.0.5 with ConfigPPP and
MacTCP to dial in to my accounts with no problem. However, the 128K/512Ks
that I have cannot use those operating systems because they are limited to a
400K boot disk. Thus the necessity of MacTerminal (and yes, ZTerm would be
far better if it would just work on a 400K disk).

Back in 98 I sent Guy Younk (of www.mac512.com fame) a boot disk I had
hacked which used ConfigPPP and MacTCP to dial up. It used System 6.0.5.
Since then, Guy and Jag have come out with more elegant solutions to Compact
Mac dial up from a 800K boot disk, but I still use that same disk as I used
back in 98 when I obtained my first compact Mac, a Plus with an external
hard drive using System 7.1. But I still like the challenge of getting the
early Macs on the internet by using MacTerminal by telnetting from a Unix
prompt, especially when I find an old 1200 baud modem that still works.
